Dear friends,

God first called my family to China. Since that time, we have traveled on short term missions to China almost every year. I have also brought hundreds of teenagers and adults to the U.S. for English camps.  God has used this time to bring many Chinese to a new life in Him.

This year, God has called me to three countries.

1.    China

2.    Rwanda

3.    Costa Rica

China trip update:

My visit to China was a very fruitful one. We have formulated future work with students of disabled orphanages by developing online specialized and individualized courses. This will begin at the new school in Langfang, China in June of 2015. The school is looking for Americans that will come to help teach the orphans.

My son-in-law, Brad Zirkel, and our daughter, Dianne are also becoming involved with Occupational Therapy to the orphans, and training for those who care for them. They are planning to use their expertise and training word-wide in several locations. The orphanage is also

I contacted and met with two new to me missionaries, who have been working as teachers/evangelists in China for 18 years. They are asking us to bring teams to work with them at a university for about a week or two each year.  They want cooperation with us to certify teachers of English in the University settings. They are also looking for teachers with master’s degrees who can help them in the Universities. The path is wide open for those that are called.

I traveled 400 miles to the South of Beijing on a Bullet train that traveled an average 200 mph, arriving in just 2 hours. What a trip! We visited with several educators, schools and a travel business in Taihuan for three days. They want us to begin a new intensive English conversation camp as early as this August. A private school there will promote it along with the travel agency. Some of the students from the camp would come to America the following summer for further education, travel, and English conversation practice.

In Beijing I visited in a house church where there was much interest in persons coming for a summer or winter camp associated with travel, education and Bible study. Also I pursued the international music camp program with them and two persons would like to come in August to discuss this further with our youth orchestra and church people in Kerrville.

I also visited with a lady whom I led to the Lord last year. She was doing well and increasing in her Faith. She has a master’s degree in English and would like to come here to teach English and Chinese. She wants to be involved greatly with American Christians.

 May 14th – 30th, Marcia and I will travel to Rwanda with a group from Kerrville First UMC. We will have a variety of projects, from painting blackboards at a school, to woodshop projects and sewing. We will visit the hospital and serve the chapel with preaching and songs. We will deliver food to a pastor and the parishioners at a church. We will set up and share VBS with children of all ages. I will be teaching an English program at the university. Several of us will start teaching there. I will be teaching a two week seminar to university prospective teachers on how to teach English as a second language. Rwanda is in the process of changing its national language to English and this seminar will enable the area we will serve to begin that process. With that program set up, many will be able to come and learn English, enabling the people to interact in many ways with the rest of the world. We will be proclaiming the Love of Jesus Christ.

I am asking you to pray for this trip. After praying, would you consider partnering with us in these ministries and others as God calls us? The overall reason for any of these trips is to introduce the saving Grace of Christ as the people learn about Jesus. Our need for this trip is still about $500 to cover Marcia’s loss of income for two weeks.

In July, I am planning to travel to Costa Rico to help in the orphanage program, using English as a way to present Jesus Christ and His love. I have a need for about $800 to complete my fund raising.

My name is Verne Wortman. I am 73 years old and I am a partially retired teacher and full time missionary.  My major teaching was in Music education and has now become TESL. We live in Bandera, Texas in the heart of the hill country near San Antonio, TX.  I am presently pursuing a Master’s Degree at Liberty University in Education in Teaching and Learning Educational Technology and Online Instruction. We have 8 children and 13 grandchildren that keep us busy while we both still work at least part time. My wife is assistant to the president of CETN, a missions group of over 500 missionaries and I am president of a missionary organization called English in Action International, responsible for bringing English education to children, youth and adults in order to also deliver the saving message of Jesus Christ. Many are orphans or disabled or both. Our concentration now is in Rwanda, a country with many needs in southeast central Africa. My study has a purpose of bringing quality distance and online education to these students and to help teachers to upgrade their education in needed areas to better service and teach needy students. I am posting this blog to show the evolution of our work in Rwanda this last year and point to my need for these classes. I will continue to develop work in Rwanda starting Sept. 15, this year and will stay there until Dec. 16, returning again from April 15-July 15, 2015. We are installing a computer workshop and learning center at a grade school and we are trying to upgrade several teachers to use technology to teach 25-85 students who have not been in school in their lifetime. Rwanda is changing to English as their first language, so we are there at a vital time in their history and have a great opportunity to serve these needy people and encourage them in Jesus Christ. Any suggestions or help any of you can give are most wanted and needed as we develop this project. I will be attaching onto the blog several letters of information and other facts as we go along. This is an exact transcript of my video blog. ED 633 students may choose which of the three trips were not accomplished and are not true.

Dear friends and partners in ministry,

Verne is counting down to the time he will leave for Rwanda!

Over this last year, God has been speaking to Verne clearly that he is just getting started in his mission with the orphans. God has spoken through our Pastor and others, challenging him to learn how to strategically multiply himself so that God can get the biggest return possible on His investment in him. He is understanding that what it looks like is teaching others to teach English. He has done this in many countries in the past. Now he is setting it up in Rwanda.

Verne has been in communication with the head of the University in Rwanda. He wants Verne to be a visiting professor at the University, not only to help them learn the best methods to teach English, but to meet their requirements for the government mandate that the country learn English. So his time to leave for Rwanda has been moved up to September 15th, to be there before classes begin.

This does not take the place of taking care of the orphans that have been identified.

What has Verne done so far?

·        Taught classes each day for the teachers while in Rwanda in May;

·        Paid for the teachers to have safe transportation home after the classes;

·        Prepared and emailed teaching materials for the teachers;

·        Raised some donated lap top computers to set up in the computer lab at the school;

·        Raised some money for uniforms and school supplies.

Laurent is a local man that God has been using to help the orphans. He is in charge of keeping track of them, even though he has no means to feed or clothe them, much less educate them. He has taught some of the older orphans a trade so they can earn a little money to buy food. Verne is working with Laurent who is working with the local teachers to develop a program for educating them.

What has Laurent done so far?

·        Keeps in touch with Verne by email and sometimes Skype;
·        Received the teaching materials Verne sent him, printed them,                                                    duplicated them and prepared them into teaching books;

·        Started meeting with the teachers and continuing the teaching Verne                                                       started.
What has the school done so far?

·        Given permission for 25 of the orphans to attend school, if they have uniforms and school supplies;

·        Are in the process of building an additional room at the school for the computer lab, with electricity and a lockable door; (neither is a normal part of the classrooms)

·        Allowed the teachers to have time each day to devote to the orphans of various ages.

What needs to be completed?

·        Other missionaries have rented a house to use as a feeding place for the orphans. The feeding program needs to be set up so the orphans have a meal before or after school each day;

·        Hire locals to cook and keep the house clean;

·        Raise funds to buy the food, pay the utilities, and pay the cooks;

·        Order the uniforms to be made before school starts;

·        Buy the school supplies;

·        Find foster homes for these orphans;

·        Complete the computer teaching lab;

·        Complete the teaching modules for multi-aged students.

What can you do to help?

·        Sponsor a child for $29 a month;

·        Donate air miles for Verne. Between his air miles and mine, he has enough for a trip to Rwanda, but not back again;

·        Donate a lap top for the computer lab;

·        Donate hotel points for use while traveling;

·        Pledge a monthly or one time donation to help with Verne’s expenses;

·        Encouragement through email is priceless;
·        Pray on a specific day of the week for:

1.    Continued good health
2.      Safety for Verne during his trip and while in Rwanda;
3.      Protection from Satan’s interference;
4.      For clarity of mind and time management;
5.      Financial support; and
6.      Guidance for the future of this program.

Sponsor a child. These are a few of the orphans that need sponsored. Help us feed, clothe and educate these precious children. More pictures on next update.

  1. Greetings! It is so nice to hear from a fellow music teacher! I am also a music teacher and it is very rare to find music teachers in my courses. What a wise decision you made in pursuing your degree to gain the knowledge that you need in order to teach others around the world. I find it even more remarkable to see how you are also spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. What an amazing task God has placed on your heart. What's even more amazing is your dedication and perseverance in making it happen. Many can learn from you and your wife. I will definitely keep you lifted in prayer. I look forward to working with you in this course.

  2. Hi Verne, I commend you for dedicating your life to helping youth with barriers. As I mentioned before, I am involved in the same activity, but I work with youth in the United States. While I realize youth in Rwanda experience dramatically fewer resources, there are many youth in America who live in dangerous and neglectful households. The youth I work with are often detained, are disengaged, have little or no support systems, and do not do well in the traditional classroom. Since we are on the same team, I hope we can figure out some exciting approaches to teaching that will help both of us. Christi

    1. Thanks for your reply. I think lack of support systems is a key to helping these students eventually succeed, I would welcome any project directed to finding good approaches for these youth. My e-mail is englishinaction@mail.com Talk to you soon.

  3. Verne,
    Wow! I hope that when I'm 73 years old I'll be as vibrant and active as you are! I commend you and your wife for dedicating yourselves to spreading the Gospel around the world. What an adventure that must be.
    I'm looking forward to working with you on the group project. I will be sending an email shortly with all of my contact information. I'm hoping that we can all keep in constant contact with each other in order to develop a project that will assist all of us in our separate endeavors.
    I don't believe that you have done a mission trip to Costa Rica. The only reason I chose that one is based on your paragraph titled "About Me". You mention China and Rwanda.....is that cheating on my part?
    Talk with you soon,
    Andy
